Endless Roads, Less Traveled
Larry | 16 September 2007Are you an avid road bike rider? Recreation Rider? Looking for great family rides? I have only been riding the back roads surrounding Asheville for about 5 years and still discover great climbs, rolling hills, and beautiful views on almost every ride. When looking at the cabin choices with Carolina Mornings, I can’t help but think of the ride I would do if I were staying the cabin.
Staying in Candler? looking for a challenging climb? Head up 151 towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. This climb is approximately 3 miles of sustained climbing, at the top the Blue Ridge Parkway awaits and you can head to Pisgah Mountain to the south or Asheville to the North.
Staying in Weaverville? Yet another 3 mile climb up Ox Creek will put you on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Don’t have your climbing legs? Head toward Weaverville and drop down to the river for some fast flat riding to the riverside town of Marshall. There are great bakeries and coffee shopes in Marshall and Weaverville so take time to refuel at these local spots
If staying South of Asheville, Old Fort, or Black Mountain, work out a loop that will take you around Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State park.
There are many weekly rides leaving from or led by local bike shops. Contact one and see if a ride fits in your schedule, or head out and explore the roads for yourself. Fall is a great season with cooler temperatures and the chaning of the leaves. Views begin to open up as the leaves fall off the trees and give a completely different feel to rides in other seasons.
If you are interested in more rides contact me when booking your cabin. Just ask for Larry and I will be happy to offer suggestions depending on where you are staying.

For your intermediate and advanced bikers, another great ride near Weaverville is the “Ox Creek Plunge”, named so because of the short and steep downhill “plunge” on Ox Creek Road. The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club lists it among their favorite rides, and some cyclists have called it one of the 10 best rides in the United States. You can read a little more about it here, http://www.milestonepress.com/html/rba_samch.pdf.
